The Assassination of Gianni Versace is the second season to the popular Netflix series, American Crime Story. The first season, The People v. O.J. Simpson, was wildly successful. So naturally, when they announced there would be a second season to this series, it created lots of buzz.

The show is based on real events, with characters played by famous actors such as Darren Criss, Ricky Martin, and Penélope Cruz. Because these actors are portraying actual people’s lives, it created some controversy. The Versace family released a public statement of disapproval for the show, claiming that the book that the show was based on was full of lies and dramatization. Antonio D’Amico, Gianni’s partner, was also unhappy with how his character was portrayed, saying it was untruthful and unrealistic. Having heard these comments, I was originally hesitant to watch the show. I am a big fan of Gianni Versace and didn’t want to support anything that didn’t do him justice. But, after multiple Emmy nominations, I decided it was time to see what the hype was all about.

In the first ten minutes of the show, it is clear that this show is well made. Set in Miami in the 1990s, the colors and soundtrack perfectly capture the aesthetic of the setting. In addition to the beautiful cinematography, the acting is superb. Darren Criss’ portrayal of the infamous serial killer is haunting, and Penélope Cruz is an extremely convincing Donatella. The plot is revealed in a series of flashbacks, starting with Gianni Versace’s actual assassination and then going back to explain how it all happened, and what went down afterwards. The show provides an inside look into the mind of a serial killer, and why he did what he did. It is all at once terrifying and incredible. Overall, I think that this show is extremely well done and does a great job of telling the story of one of fashion’s greatest tragedies.
