Chilling temperatures throughout the United States in past weeks have affected millions of Americans. These temperatures are the result of a polar vortex- a low pressure area with cold air that moves southward from the north pole- and several northern states received the brunt of it.

While temperatures here didn’t get below the teens, below zero temperatures in the northern states affected many. According to a Washington Post article, in late January it was 31 degrees below zero some places in Wisconsin and 17 below in parts of Michigan.

Several deaths were caused by these dangerously low temperatures. The “boiling water challenge” where one throws water into the air and watches it freeze instantly- though very cool to watch- sent eight people to the hospital. On a more positive spin a girl from Iowa went outside with wet hair in the midst of these below zero temperatures and returned with her hair frozen but perfectly healthy.

The polar vortex was short-lived, and temperatures across the nation have now returned to normal for this time of year.
